Neurodivergent learners
There is no single approach that works for everyone. Some learners benefit from visual explanations, some learn best through repetition, and others need extra time to process information before applying it behind the wheel.
Jim takes the time to understand how each learner responds to instruction and adjusts the lesson structure accordingly. The focus is on building skills at a pace that feels manageable while still making steady progress.
Whether a learner has ADHD, ADD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Asperger’s syndrome, anxiety, processing differences or other learning challenges, lessons are adapted to suit the individual rather than forcing everyone into the same approach.
Every learner’s needs are different, but adjustments may include:
• Breaking complex tasks into smaller steps
• Practising one skill at a time before combining multiple tasks
• Using consistent language and routines between lessons
• Allowing extra time for decision-making and processing
• Reducing unnecessary pressure during learning
• Repeating key skills until they become comfortable and familiar
The goal is not to make lessons easier. The goal is to make learning clearer, more effective and more achievable.
Many learners arrive after negative experiences with previous instructors, family members or well-meaning friends. Others may have been told they are not capable drivers because they learn differently.
Driving is a skill that can be developed through practice, repetition and good instruction. Progress may look different from one learner to the next, but confidence often grows quickly when lessons are structured, predictable and focused on achievable goals.
Jim’s approach is built around patience, communication and practical skill development, helping learners feel comfortable enough to focus on the road rather than worrying about making mistakes..
